Dear Friends:

The Florida Legislature will be coming together for the 2012 Legislative Session beginning on January 10. This year will come with its own set of challenges, including a $2 billion dollar budget shortfall and the very complicated redistricting discussions.

As you know, Governor Scott and the Florida Chamber supported Florida's Race to the Top application. Although Florida was not awarded the grant, we fully anticipate that the Governor and the business community will continue to support our collective efforts to improve Florida's early care and education system. Our challenge is to make sure all members of the legislature understand the benefits, costs and return on investment of a high-quality early education.

  • January 5, 2012: For Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten program providers and administrators, this link provides access to the secure readiness rate website for Florida VPK providers and administrators. This link can be used to login to your secured account to complete the verification, dispute, acknowledgment and other VPK Readiness Rate related processes. Go to VPK readiness rate website.
  • January 4, 2012: VPK Providers: There are several changes to the readiness rate process and calculation this year. You should have received a letter from the Department of Education in December. Use the 4-digit User ID listed and the password “ready2012” to access your Readiness Rate. A copy of the letter can be found here.

  • December 27, 2011: Miami-Dade County will hold a workshop for interested child care providers to discuss the requirements to become a Head Start provider. These discussions will include future business opportunities with Miami-Dade County's Head Start Program, read more.

  • December 19, 2011: Let’s Move! Child Care is an effort to promote children’s health by encouraging and supporting healthier physical activity and nutrition practices for children in child care.   • October 18, 2011: The Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds were formally adopted by the State Board of Education. These Standards create a common framework and language for providers of VPK Education Programs as well as School Readiness Programs serving four-year-olds for the purpose of teaching and learning. The Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring early care and education for children in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Through a variety of affordable and innovative early education and voluntary pre-kindergarten programs, the Coalition serves more than 50,000 children ages birth to 12 years old and their families.

Founded in 2000, the Coalition is among 31 similar organizations in the State of Florida established following the enactment of the School Readiness Act, which consolidated Florida’s early learning services into one integrated program.
